The Safer Internet Hotline operates an online reporting platform to allow internet users to anonymously report any offensive, harmful or illegal content (including paedophilic content and illegal pornography) found on the Internet. Within the existing legal framework, the hotline ensures that any content found to be illegal is removed from the Internet. It also forwards any information that may be linked to a crime to the competent Hungarian police authorities. The Commission's Internet Hotline has been providing the possibility to report illegal content since May 2011. The hotline is part of the Hungarian Safer Internet Consortium and was set up under the Safer Internet Plus programme with the support of the European Union.
